What Is A Helper?

What Is A Helper?

To give credit and context where it is due, Fred Rogers was the inspiration for this name, or more accurately, his mom.

"When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, 'Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.'" -Fred Rogers

Being a Helper is something more of a verb than a noun. Hopefully, this takes some pressure off if you are wondering how to be a “Helper”. Anyone can do it. We can earn that title from moment to moment. Being a helper can come in many forms. On a more individual basis, we see examples like the gentleman who saved a man from a burning truck, or we can simply see someone with their hands full and give them a hand in passing.

Then we see teams or organizations of people doing work to make the world a better place. From for-profit organizations like Interface Inc., who is striving for carbon neutrality as seen in the film Beyond Zero, to non-profit organizations like Doctors/Engineers Without Borders or organizations dedicated to stopping human trafficking.

The beautiful thing about being a Helper is that it can be a something we do as a job (like a nurse or a utility worker), or it can be small (but powerful) actions in our day-to-day lives. We all have a part to play in creating the world we want to see. Imagine how this all relates and snowballs in our upcoming article on societal neuroplasticity.

LITM’s core is to inspire and support the #Helpers

A quote about the film Beyond Zero:

"This film tells a powerful and hugely hopeful story about what it means to build a business around restoring the earth and why we must reimagine capitalism to heal the world – and ourselves.  Don't just see this movie, bring its lessons into your company, and fast."

~ Rebecca Henderson, Professor, Harvard Business School & Author, Reimagining Capitalism in a World on Fire
